Many design students graduate with little exposure to sustainability, despite the growing impact of design decisions on the environment. Ecosketchbook: Design for Sustainability was created to fill that gap with an approachable, hands-on introduction to sustainable design thinking.
Part educational guide and part sketchbook, the book pairs practical sustainability concepts with prompts, questions, and space to draw and explore ideas. It helps readers understand how everyday choices affect the environment, then connects those insights to the design process—showing how thoughtful design can reduce impact, lower costs, and create more desirable products. Topics include ecological footprints, zero waste, cradle-to-cradle, biomimicry, life cycle assessment, sustainable design strategies, and communicating sustainability.
The project began as an Italian publication created by Barbara Pollini and Antonia Teatino and first printed by Anima Mundi in 2014. After discovering the book during my thesis research, I joined the authors to expand and adapt it for a broader audience. Together, we developed an updated international edition, released in English in 2017, with expanded content and updated resources for deeper learning.
